Traffic Calming

Project Overview

Background

The City of Burlingame strives to maintain a livable community and continually seeks to improve the quality of life for its residents.

A comprehensive traffic study has been initiated by requests from members of the Lyon-Hoag and adjacent neighborhoods to investigate a variety of concerns such as speeding, parking, and cut-through traffic.

TJKM, a professional transportation consulting firm, has been hired by the City to investigate any issues raised by the residents and to recommend any traffic calming solutions that may be feasible.

Study Area

The study area is generally bordered by Peninsula Avenue on the south, California Drive on the west, Oak Grove Avenue on the north, and Rollins Road on the east.

The project team has collected background information of the study area, including traffic volumes, collision history, existing multimodal infrastructure and residents’ concerns. The following are some of the existing conditions of the study area:

We have launched an online survey prior to the community workshop to collect as much feedback as we can to better understand your concerns with regard to traffic and safety in your neighborhood. As of March 4th, 2019, we have received 98 responses out of which 80 were received before the commencement of the workshop.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOP 3

The third community workshop was held to finalize all the refined alternatives for traffic calming in the three neighborhoods. The meeting was held on October 2, 2019, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Social Hall at the Burlingame Recreation Center. Presentation, photos and other materials (boards containing the different phases of the project, refined solutions, various traffic calming measures implemented and concept designs) can be found here:

Traffic Calming

Traffic calming is a process to reduce vehicular speeds and manage cut-through traffic. It is comprised of strategies and engineering solutions to improve safety for all mode users; mitigate impact on residential neighborhoods and school zones; and enhance quality of life for the residents.
